My car tried to run away yesterday

What a weekend! Out with the gang (Erin, Ali, and Kyle) Friday and Saturday nights. Friday was dinner, driving and swimming followed by a movie. Saturday was TV, talking and swimming/hot tubbing. The gang is building again it seems. That always makes me happy, alone time and “us” time is great, but I need group time too now and then. The summer holds promise for some interesting times.

Yesterday was a day though, one that I was glad to be done with. I woke up in a bad mood from being out late the night before and it went down hill from there. Thankfully and regrettably I had the house to myself in the afternoon, I planned to clean up my room, the car, and just chill for a while. It quickly turned ugly. I let the battery on my car run down completely while cleaning it out and getting distracted with laundry. Dead, not even enough to make the engine turn over slightly. Crap.

Normally we have all kinds of odd tools and stuff around the house, not a battery charger though. Since no one else was home I had no one there to jump start my car either. I called and found that I had access to my uncle’s car but I had one small problem since my car was in my garage and no one was there to help guide it out. I got his car in my driveway and then thought about how I would get my car out. It’s a straight shot out of the garage into the driveway and the driveway isn’t that slanted, a quick push out the door and then jump in to stop it and then a quick jump and I’d be on my way. Of course it sounded all too easy.

I lined my car up to push it out, just a little turn to the steering wheel to square it up. A small push got me to the edge of the driveway/garage then another push would take the back wheels over the small bump that separates the two structures. One more push from the front wheels and I’d be set. I lined up on the front of the car, I couldn’t push with the door open or I’d risk ripping off the door of the car or screwing up the side of the garage door opening. I pushed just enough to get over the bump, the car took off down the driveway. I mean it went a lot faster that I thought it would. I quickly ran around to the side of the car, jumped into it while it was increasing in speed, slammed on the non-power brakes and threw it into gear. The car lurched to a stop nearly at the sidewalk by the edge of the driveway. I was 5 feet from the busiest road in my neighborhood. Terrific.

I hooked up the jumper cables and proceeded to jump the car, of course that didn’t go that well either. My battery was so dead that I couldn’t just hook up the cables and go, no I had to wait 10 minutes to get the thing charged up. Geez, not my day. Knowing what I know about cars (not that much probably) I knew that I had to let it run for a while so the alternator could charge up the battery again. I moved my uncle’s car back to his house and locked it up again.

A quick trip to Peru would help charge it up I thought. I took it to AutoZone to see if they’d test it out to make sure that I just ran it down and there really wasn’t a bigger problem with the car. The battery hadn’t fully charged during the 15 minute ride to the store and the guy said that I could have a problem with the battery. I had the cables in my trunk still and thought instead of buying a new $60-80 battery I would chance it for the evening and see how it would work out.

Back home to shower and get ready to go to Kokomo. The car started like a champ on my way out to hang out. I had the cables I was ready. We did our thing at Kyle’s house and headed home a little earlier than I thought we would, but late enough I suppose. No problems.

Today I headed back to AutoZone and received a clean bill of health for my battery. All is well again.

For a moment yesterday I imagined my car rolling down the driveway and crashing into a slow moving Chevy, that would kill my insurance payments for sure. Luckily all is well and the guy said I really have nothing to worry about. I’m still buying a battery charger this week, just in case.

No Motivation

So I got up late this morning, ate some left over Subway and read the paper. I went to my uncles to work on some video for about 30 minutes. Now it’s time to study. Let’s review what I have to get done today, or at least this week (if I don’t do it today, it’ll never happen): Study for IB Midterm (Monday), Complete research and writing of J404 journal (Tuesday), Complete marketing question, 2 pages plus (Wesnesday), work on Case Study, 6 pages plus PowerPoint slides (Thursday), Start J404 case, due next tuesday… So there’s all this stuff I basically have to get done today, the problem? I have no motivation what so ever to even touch any of it. This is all very bad. I dont’ know if its just my mood lately or that I can’t get a comfortable place to study lately, either way I don’t want anything to do with school today… Stripes is on too, that’s going to make studying even harder… Here’s to the books!

I hate HP

So I woke this morning with the full intention of doing mostly nothing but setting up a router for my cousin and watching the IU game. Of course it’s never that way.

My uncle bought an HP computer about a year ago, I told him to buy a Dell, but of course he doesn’t listen at all. You see there are things about computers that I know, among them are how to setup routers and not to buy HP. So it turns out that HP doesn’t include restore CDs of any kind with their computers so even if you do have a problem but you must be able to at least boot the computer in order to restore it. Not so easy with a totally busted hard drive. Of course that’s what I had to deal with today, the computer is out of warranty, the discs are $40 and my uncle is livid. All the while I’m just thinking about how to say “I told you so” over and over again. With most Dells I could have went to Best Buy, bought a new drive and then installed Windows and be on my way. Stupid HP doesn’t let you do that. I finally got all that figured out after missing half the game. I’m seriously so sick of fixing that computer I could scream. Why doesn’t he listen to what I say? Not only has his computer died but it died without him making any backups of any of his data, I told him a hundred times to at least back up some of the more important things on his computer. I’m just sick of it all right now i don’t want to write any more right now… maybe i’ll post something else later tonight.
BTW, IU beat Purdue 62-49. From what I saw it was a close game off and on.

I think I was productive

Today was one of those days with lots to do and honestly I think I did more than I expected. I feel very accomplished right now.

I got up, fixed my uncle’s computer. My g-ma and I decided that my cousin needed her own computer so we found a Dell that will suit her just fine. Nothing fancy, but it’ll work great. I’m paying for it, g-ma is paying me back in a month. I went to Kokomo and fixed Franki’s computer kinda. It works fine, just not as well as I’d like it to. I read the WSJ for the first time, not bad, I feel so adult now. 🙂 Erin and I got our plane tickets for spring break. We’re set and I’m excited about the trip again. So today I’ve fixed 2 computers, ordered 1 more, bought 2 plane tickets. $1200 and I really didn’t spend any of my money. A good day really.

Time for bed so I can be up to watch the Colts pound the Steelers!

What a day…

Well it’s been one of those days so far today… I woke up this afternoon (yes I did mean afternoon) and sat around for a while before the Colts game came on. While I was reading the paper, waiting on the aforementioned game to start I was told that my uncle’s computer needed some work. Usually not a problem, something easy like plugging in the power cord on the printer, today was no such day. I went over there during halftime to check things out. He had hosed his system, spyware galore… That took a while to get off then he told me about some email that he had gotten from "Paypal." It was asking him to verify his password, he clicked the link and gave away all his personal info. So I had to get into the real Paypal and try to fix it all. He lost some money, but I think all is well now. It’s now halfway through the 4th quarter when I get home. Of course we all know by now that the Colts lost a tough game, they just couldn’t execute today, no big deal, the real season doesn’t start up again until January.

The other thing that went wrong today that I just recently found out was the fact that when I ordered a new computer yesterday from Dell, for whatever reason, the order didnt’ go through. I found a sweet deal on the Dell Outlet and tried to buy it, it didn’t work. Of course by the time I had figured that out the computer was gone. I just bought a brand new one, screw it, I’m tired of dealing with the crap, it’s only money right?

Now I’m sitting here waiting on time to go play ball, maybe that’ll go better…
