Another week gone by

So another week has gone by and I haven’t blogged anything more than the auto-tweet posts.

As you might remember we signed up for Hoosier Organics a few weeks ago and I must say it’s gone pretty well. We had our second delivery last week: Romaine, Bananas, Oranges, Brussels Sprouts, Strawberries, Potatoes, Grape Tomatoes, and a whole Pineapple. All very good quality and most importantly, shoved into our home and putting them right there on the counter for us to eat. I hate wasting fresh food. We are going to eat it. We actually up’d our deliveries to weekly, since we liked it so much. I’ve found myself making new recipes and experimenting in the kitchen again, it’s wonderful. A few quick things I’ve made up lately.

Pickles in the Fridge

Take a few cucumbers and cut them into quarters, place into a jar or other container that will allow them to be covered in liquid. The liquid: 1 quart of water with 1.5 oz. of salt dissolved in it. Add a teaspoon-ish of garlic, a teaspoon-ish of dill seed and dill weed, about 10-15 black peppercorns and a dash of red pepper flakes to the jar. Pour the brine liquid over the cukes and seal/cover. Let it sit for about 4-5 days and you’ll have amazing refrigerator pickles that are crunchy and fresh with perfect flavor.

Tomato Cheese Salad

Cut some grape or cherry tomatoes in half. Add cheese, mozzarella or colby jack works well, cut it up into chunks about the same size as the tomato pieces. Toss with creamy italian dressing. Chill and enjoy.

Better Tasting Brussels Sprouts (Not great, just better)

Clean Brussels Sprouts, cut in half. Toss with a bit of vegetable oil and Mrs. Dash to coat. Spread on a cookie sheet and bake in a 400 degree oven for about 10 minutes until sprouts are just barely tender. NOT SOFT! Eat with a little butter on the side.

I’m going to try to post some more recipes as I figure them out and adapt them.

In other news, I won free popcorn by following the right person on Twitter this week. Saturday we went to Shipshewana and shopped all day with my grandparents. Today was the best though, I got up, we cleaned the house top to bottom for the first time in a few weeks and the I laid on the couch to watch the 400. I fell asleep half way through and got a good 30 minute nap. Hung out with Kyle for a bit and I’m heading to bed soon.

Ya know, if the weather would cool down a bit this would be the perfect time of year for me. Fresh fruit and veggies all around makes for great cooking opportunities, there’s baseball and tons of sunshine. Its just 10 degrees too hot out.

Latest Mac Rumors: Netbooks and New Mac Minis

There are a number of rumors circulating about what news Apple might make at next month’s Macworld expo. Last year’s Macworld brought the announcement of the Macbook Air, and two years ago, it was the iPhone. So what will be the big announcement this year? Depending on who you ask, we may see an Apple netbook, an iPhone Nano, or maybe just an updated Mac Mini.

via Latest Mac Rumors: Netbooks and New Mac Minis – PC World.

I’m excited about this. I already have an Asus eeePC 1000HA but the thought of netbooks reaching more of the masses is great. I think that probably netbooks will become the new “couch computer” in the next few years, you know that computer you piddle with while you’re on the couch watching TV and whatnot.

I use mine all the time for blogging and just general surfing.

Mac Mini? Nah, that’s not going to be a mainstream thing I think. It was a cool thing at first but PCs are too cheap to do just the same. One niche I’ve found, grandparents computer. It’s easy to use and setup, with remote control software its easy to maintain, and the lack of confusing buttons and system popups make it not scary to those who may have never used a computer before. I’ve set 2 up in that manner, one was nearly flawless, email, surfing, digital photos, all worked perfectly well and I only spend about 15 minutes a week showing them new features. The other? Well the user wasn’t ready for it and didn’t see the utility of it, not Apple’s fault.

Vacation Day 1

I took off the rest of the year from work (except for 15 minutes via the web on Friday/Saturday at the end of the month). 11 days of no work basically. I have some plans, painting, relaxing, cleaning, etc. I’m going to try to blog about each day at it goes.

I planned to wake up early today, head to the bank and then head out to finish my Christmas shopping before it got too crazy out. Didn’t happen. I woke up at 1045, I finally got out of the house at 1130, the bank closes at 12 and it’s 35 minutes away. I made it to the bank. Then I headed off to the mall. Everyone else got up before 1045 or didn’t have to go to the bank because they were already there.

I think I literally walked a quarter mile to get in the place. I headed to my first stop, sold out. Second stop, long lines but they had what I needed. Third stop, longer lines but they have staggard lines (half close to the door, half a little farther back) I ran to one of the closer to the door ones, around about 6 other people, and got out quickly. Did I break a rule or some kind of social more by doing that? I don’t care particularly, it’s Christmas time and it’s every man for themself.

I’m back home now and totally just relaxing, while doing some laundry, I need to clean the house but I’m just not in the mood today. Maybe late tonight or tomorrow, or next week.

Relaxation.

After outting update: Erin and I went out with Kyle tonight. We ran into my grandparents and they even bought us dinner.  Nice. We headed out to Best Buy and the mall. It’s always an adventure, though we didn’t go to Penney’s for towels (inside joke). All in all it was a pretty good time. It’s raining out now but the night was great with great friends and always interesting conversation.

Christmas Vacation is on Tivo now, my favorite holiday movie after A Christmas Story. What can I say, I’m a little demented. I’ve enver seen White Christmas or It’s a Wonderful Life, so I go with what I know. Heading to bed soon so I can do nothing tomorrow but football and chillin’.

The tube is off!

After the game tonight I left my grandparents’ house and headed home as usual. I needed to stop off to get some bleach and laundry soap at Meijer, because it was on sale and I hate going to Walmart on any evening. Nothing unusual yet.

I put my headphones on and turned up the iPhone and headed into the store. A little podcast listening while I walked the store was amazing! I didn’t hear the annoying overhead loud speaker asking so-and-so to call such-and-such. Just my podcasts and a little music. I headed up to check out and took out the earbuds long enough to pay. No one said anything and I didn’t notice any weird looks really.  After I paid, I drove home to the sounds of the new Starbucks Free iTunes songs. Not bad really.

Once I got home and had everything put away, I cleaned the bathtub quickly with my newly purchased Comet. A little bleach in the toilet and a quick scrub finished off the chores for the evening.

Now it was “my time.” I could do what I normally do and turn on the TV and just sit here numb and watch whatever the Tivo caught over the last few hours or I could do what I’ve been really meaning to do and start reading again. Books. Not blogs, not weird websites, not Wikipedia. Books. With pages. I went through my bookshelf the other day and moved all the books I own but haven’t read to one side of one shelf. There are about 12 that need to be taken care of. Some fiction, mostly non-fiction. I also realized that I ordered 3 books last week that were going to have to be read. I find that I keep buying books and never read them. Gotta change that, I’m going to start reading again. Books. Tonight I read about 50 pages in a book I’ve been working on for months about the origins of Freemasonry. Its dry admittedly, but I started it, made it 100 pages in and now I am going to finish it. I’ll probably try to alternate between fiction and non-fiction, much like I do with Netflix, a documentary, an Office disc, then some random movie, and back around again.

Changing my choices like that keeps it fresh for me. Sometimes I can be analytical considering the consequences of the actual decisions of others, and other times I can let my imagination run wild, thinking of what the characters and scenes actually look like and hearing them saying their lines.

As usual I’m changing things in life for the sake of change mostly. But honestly I haven’t even wanted to turn the TV on tonight and it’s been kind of nice just sitting here in the quiet calm of the late fall evening, just me and my thoughts. Peace, of the mind and of the world, is greatly under appreciated.
