We bought a couch going to a baseball game

We had a pretty good date night last night, it started with a morning walk to the farmers market and ended up at The Vic.
Tipton has started a farmers market, this being the first week, we wanted to go and support the cause. We got some dog treats, fresh sugar snap peas,, and some of the best homemade bread I’ve ever tasted! This stuff was amazing, the lady told us that she had milled the wheat format on Friday and fresh baked the bread. It was just so sweet and chewy and just perfect. Definitely going to be on our frequently visited booths list. On our way back home we stopped by the plant store, picked up,some begonias, like 48 of the to be exact, we got those planted out back in a bed that we’ve long neglected, now it’s starting to look pretty good.

Once we got all that done, we decided we needed mulch, a quick trip to Lowes was in order. On the way, we were talking and the Indians game came up, we decided to go, the game didn’t start for another 4 hours or so, we figured we could load the mulch up, head back home, change, and make it with tons of time to spare. No problem.

We left a little earlier than we had even planned though, we were going to be there about half an hour before the gates even opened, let alone the first pitch.

You see, there is some major road construction going on in Hamilton county, on US 31, Major Moves I believe it is called. The intersection at SR32 and US31 is due to be reconfigured next year i believe and as such they are closing some local businesses at the corner to allow for the new interchange. A furniture store is one of those effected. Erin and I were thinking about stopping by for quite a few weeks, but it’s one of those things that we never seem to get around to, we decided to finally stop and look around. Not planning to get anything but just see how good the deals were and if they had anything that we might want to check out.

About 5 minutes after walking in the door, she sat down on a couch and decided it was perfect for us. I totally, 100% agreed. It was the right color, size and everything, heck, it even had a recliner built in to each end. Perfect.

So we bought it.

Of course we couldn’t take it with us downtown and set everything up to pick it up this morning. After that we headed downtown and watched a great Indians game.

Definitely a change of plans from what we started that day with. It was awesome.

This morning, I went to pick up the couch, that’s when the fun began again. More on that next time…

Another week gone by

So another week has gone by and I haven’t blogged anything more than the auto-tweet posts.

As you might remember we signed up for Hoosier Organics a few weeks ago and I must say it’s gone pretty well. We had our second delivery last week: Romaine, Bananas, Oranges, Brussels Sprouts, Strawberries, Potatoes, Grape Tomatoes, and a whole Pineapple. All very good quality and most importantly, shoved into our home and putting them right there on the counter for us to eat. I hate wasting fresh food. We are going to eat it. We actually up’d our deliveries to weekly, since we liked it so much. I’ve found myself making new recipes and experimenting in the kitchen again, it’s wonderful. A few quick things I’ve made up lately.

Pickles in the Fridge

Take a few cucumbers and cut them into quarters, place into a jar or other container that will allow them to be covered in liquid. The liquid: 1 quart of water with 1.5 oz. of salt dissolved in it. Add a teaspoon-ish of garlic, a teaspoon-ish of dill seed and dill weed, about 10-15 black peppercorns and a dash of red pepper flakes to the jar. Pour the brine liquid over the cukes and seal/cover. Let it sit for about 4-5 days and you’ll have amazing refrigerator pickles that are crunchy and fresh with perfect flavor.

Tomato Cheese Salad

Cut some grape or cherry tomatoes in half. Add cheese, mozzarella or colby jack works well, cut it up into chunks about the same size as the tomato pieces. Toss with creamy italian dressing. Chill and enjoy.

Better Tasting Brussels Sprouts (Not great, just better)

Clean Brussels Sprouts, cut in half. Toss with a bit of vegetable oil and Mrs. Dash to coat. Spread on a cookie sheet and bake in a 400 degree oven for about 10 minutes until sprouts are just barely tender. NOT SOFT! Eat with a little butter on the side.

I’m going to try to post some more recipes as I figure them out and adapt them.

In other news, I won free popcorn by following the right person on Twitter this week. Saturday we went to Shipshewana and shopped all day with my grandparents. Today was the best though, I got up, we cleaned the house top to bottom for the first time in a few weeks and the I laid on the couch to watch the 400. I fell asleep half way through and got a good 30 minute nap. Hung out with Kyle for a bit and I’m heading to bed soon.

Ya know, if the weather would cool down a bit this would be the perfect time of year for me. Fresh fruit and veggies all around makes for great cooking opportunities, there’s baseball and tons of sunshine. Its just 10 degrees too hot out.

Winter can’t be over!

It’s been warm the last few days here at The Green. Raining too. So basically the foot of snow that we had on the ground is almost gone. They say that there could be an inch or two tomorrow night and then there is talk out there on the weather nerd forums that there could be a storm coming later in the week after that. Maybe even a huge storm coming around the 1st of March. We’ll just have to wait and see about all that though.

The one big problem with all the melting and the additional rain we’ve had is the fact that the basement here at The Green has bit of a flooding problem. It’s not a “water coming through the walls” problem so much as its a “water comes up through the floor” problem. So when we have rain, the floor isn’t wet for a day or so, time for the water to soak in and then come up under the floor. The joy of the spring fall is indescribable. Tonight I’m dealing with that problem, it’s still soaking in to the ground so basically anything I try to do now outside of running a few fans and squeegeeing the floor now and then is moot. Later this year though I’m going to reseal the floor and see if I can make some progress that way.

I’m going to miss winter actually, I love driving home a little early from work that one or two days of the season where the snow falls quickly and it’s wet and heavy enough that you can’t quite get up to speed on the highway. The car in front of you is throwing a little wet snow off it’s tires and there is an eerie silence even when you’re in traffic. I love the quiet still of winter, in summer there’s usually locusts and dogs barking. Winter though, even when it’s a little too warm and humid, is usually quiet and even the smallest noise pierces through the air.

We’ve got some interesting stuff coming up in the next month or two, baseball is starting, I think we’re heading to Avenue Q at Purdue soon, and who knows what work will bring.

I’ve got plenty to plan to do around here, repairs to make to The Green, flowers to plant, landscaping to do, should be a great spring/summer coming up. I’m just not quite ready to start it all yet, bring on the blizzard!
