A nice long weekend

Friday I headed out to Ohio for work, just the usual easy trip over there and back, nothing spectacular.

Once I got home though, I headed out and did something I’ve been wanting to do for a while, bought a new charcoal grill. It’s just a little Weber Smokey Joe, perfect for Erin and I to make dinner on. We had pork chops on it that night too, they were amazing!

Saturday, Kyle and I headed out early to Wright-Patterson AFB to see the National Museum of the Air Force. We had a good time, just kinda wandered through the place and got to see some real pieces of history up close. I love looking at the medals and awards of soldiers, sailors, and airmen, the valor they exhibited that got them highest honors among their peers and among all Americans. On our way home we stopped for some Big Boy, it’s been a while since I’ve been here too.

The last stop we made on the way home was Hoosier Park. Horse racing and a casino, the perfect place to end the night. We placed a few bets on some races, if we would have had a clue as to how to bet on a race, we might have won a few bucks. It was cool though, I did learn quite a bit about how the betting works and maybe next time

Once we got home, I found the perfect way to end the night. A small fire and just some quiet time to reflect. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sunday was a typical Sunday. Mowed the yard while Erin cleaned the house up and then headed out for dinner and grocery shopping.

Today: I worked. Kinda. It was slow and long.

Gotta get back at this…

There’s been so much going on the last few days this might just be a dump post to catch everything up, I’ll probably miss a bunch too.

My birthday was last Saturday, the 28th year, it’s already begun and I feel like it shouldn’t be here yet. I feel like I’m getting older but not moving forward as fast as I always thought I would. I guess I just feel old or something and don’t know how/where to push forward right now. I’m sure in 20 years I’ll look back and wish I wouldn’t have pushed forward so much.

I wonder if I’ll still be writing then?

Saturday, Erin and I went out on the town so to speak, not a fancy thing, just out and about in Indy. We don’t do that much anymore, life gets in the way too much. We went to an auction first thing in the morning but didn’t stay long because things were just going for way too much money. After that we went to get her a new iPhone 3GS, I got my iPhone 4 Friday so she was itching for a new one too I think. We’re both pretty happy with each of our choices. We stopped at Lowes next and bought a new microwave, we had to do it, our old one took like 3 minutes to cook pizza rolls, now we can do it in 1. Then we went home, installed the new microwave, and chilled for a bit. Dinner at Logan’s and a quick grocery trip rounded out our day.

Sunday was my official birthday party or whatever you want to call it, family dinner basically. We had a good time. I did a good deed, and honestly it made me feel like I was making a difference and helping out someone who really needed it. I love that feeling. That selfless giving feeling that you get when you go out of your way to make a miracle happen for someone.

Last night, I went out with Kyle for a traditional guys night dinner, Hacienda and Best Buy. Had a pretty good time there too.

Work: What can I say about work other than it’s been stressful at times and dead at other times. Just not into talking about it now I guess.

Its odd to have old friends coming back into the picture now, we’ll see how that goes.

Courtney just headed off to Tasmania, it’s going to be a while before she gets back. I hope we can pick up right where we left off when she gets back.

I’d better get going… more forthcoming, including July 4th plans.

Not quite how it was planned

I woke up Sunday night to an awful racket. Sort of a “ca-chunk” followed by the sound of running water. I had no idea what it could be, I got up to investigate, the toilet was running. Odd, I couldn’t have flushed it from my deep slumber. I opened the tank to see a broken valve. The water was going to just run until this was solved.

Broken ToiletI managed to finally get the shutoff valve to close so that it wouldn’t run all night but that still left me with a toilet that really didn’t work. At 2am, I honestly didn’t care nor did I consider what I would do in the morning without a toilet.

I woke up, realized my predicament and finally just resorted to using the toilet, turning on the valve, under the toilet, flushing and then turning it back off. Not a great way to live. Unfortunately, the management of my apartment only works from 1-5 M-F, it was 7 on a M and I needed it to be at least 1 on a M.

I arrived home early on M, taking time off of work to make sure that everything went smoothly. After arriving at home, about 315 in the PM on M, I found a note on the office door. “Sorry, we’re cheap, can’t afford two managers at our two properties, I won’t be around this week, I have a cell phone the number is _______, please only call in case of an emergency.” Sorry? Please sir, you’ve got to do better than that. I called, a broken toilet when you live on the second floor and have an iced tea problem is an emergency.

So about 330 on M I called the manager. He said he would get a hold of the maintenance man and get back to me, because for some reason just giving out the maintenance man’s phone/pager number would be too hard. I got a call back about 5 minutes later, the maintenance man was at his other job and wouldn’t be able to be there until at least 715 on M. This sets me off pretty much, he has another job, I respect that, but doesn’t this qualify as an emergency. Am I really supposed to go without a toilet for more or less 4 hours? Screw that, I’m going to Ace and get the parts myself.

Fixed, no problem at all, toilet repair isn’t that bad actually. At 630 on M, after finishing up, cleaning up, and making a delicious dinner for myself, I called the manager to tell him that I had it fixed, don’t send the maintenance man. I think he was pretty much ticked. He can get over it. I feel much better now.

A Sunday Morning Ritual

It’s Sunday morning. The day of rest has begun. For some families there is church or a family brunch. Some spend the afternoon watching TV or going shopping. Dinner time on Sunday can be a special time for some too.

My ritual on Sunday morning is the paper. I have a way of doing it. I have a method of devouring the paper in short order while still getting everything I have come to expect from it. I start by separating the ads from the regular paper, then I take out the Parade magazine and comics and set those aside. I sort out the ads, looking for stores that I shop at and stores that I’m looking for something from. Coupons are usually at the bottom and since I’ve moved out, I’m looking at those a bit more now.

Once I’ve read all the ads I start into the paper. With a  Sunday paper I rarely read all of it like I would a normal paper during the week that is usually much smaller than Sunday’s. I read the front page, the front page of the sports section, the local politics sections, the wedding and engagement sections to see if someone I know has changed their life, and finally I rifle through the rest of the pages scanning the headlines for anything else that piques my interest.

Lastly I read my favorite comics and through out the Parade magazine.

It takes me about 30 minutes to an hour to get through the paper. Honestly, the day just doesn’t feel right unless I’ve read the paper, all of it.

I think the small rituals and habits that we all have really make the world worth living in sometimes. I value the little things that make my life worth living, even it’s as simple as reading the Sunday paper.

A house made entirely of prime numbers

I’m basically just going to do a brain dump for you form the past three or four days since I’ve totlaly neglected my blog this week. The end of the school year is fast approachign and all that stuff is coming due of course. I’m happy to say that now I’m down to one last presentation to give before finals. I only have 3 of those so I feel pretty good about school right now.

Thursday was an interesting day, no one was at school basically and we had our huge paper due. The presentation went well no major foul-ups except that I said Vincennes was in the northern part of the state. Oh well. Thursday we all went out for TNH of course, Kyle joined us too. Softball was a bust, we headed to Jen’s instead. After the “1 block” walk to Blockbuster turned into 6 blocks and a stop at McD’s we started watching Three Amigos. Why? I don’t know. No one watched the movie and we all broke off into little groups and just chatted for a while basically. Brooke, Kyle, and Brittany provided ample discussion although I think Kyle was focusing more on the Yankees than our convo. Nothing else major really….

Friday was work. What a day, a huge new, 30,000 lb machine was delievered. Some adjustments had to be made to the buidling to get it in the door, namely, trimming the posts near the doors so that the machine would fit, did I mention these posts were cement and steel.. Yeah, it was kinda cool. The machine is there now, smells like a new car for some reason btw. Friday night Erin went with her cousin to the ballet and Orion and I headed out for some golf. Actually I taught him how to play golf, or at least attempted too. We hit a bucket at Rice’s and then tried out the par 3 course. The course was in horrid shape, greens were covered in weeds basically. I did OK, better than I thought I’d do after taking all of last year off basically. O did so so, mainly because he’s never hit a golf ball before. We went to Pancho’s got some great food and talked to Martin for a bit. That man is hilarious, a great waiter like him is hard to come by. I’m glad that I have people in places to help me out like Martin and Kevin (my hair guy). A quick trip to Walmart followed. The best part of the night though was a long drive through the country with the radio blaring, I mean loud and proud blaring. I had some country going and I just cranked it up and sang my heart out. I needed a night like that, I just drove around aimlessly and had a great time honesly. Finally though I figured I should head in and get some rest, I got in a little before 12.

Satuday I got up, washed the car (like with a bucket and sponge) and cleaned the whole thing out. Its looking pretty good still I must say. Needs a good wax job and no rain for a bit though. I actually havent’ washed the car very well lately, usually a quick run through the cheap place and that was it, no Mike’s since winter probably and no sponge jobs since before winter. I need to take better care of that thing really. Saturday night, Erin made lasagne and had some friends over. Great food, interesting convos, all in all a good time really.

Today, Sunday, I got up and relaxed. It was so nice outside I didn’t want to do anything but be outside soaking up some sun. We got a new grill so I put that together, seasoned it a bit and helped gma with some stuff. I cooked dinner (hamburgers and hot dogs with grilled onions) and ate too much. After dinner Kyle, Orion and I headed out to the park for some catch, that didn’t last long and we headed to Rice’s for another bucket. I gotta get my swing back, my slice is killing me! A quick stop at Jake’s closed out the night.

Now I’m home, it’s way too late, but I have most of the paper written, I should have been working on it all day but it was way too nice to be inside on the computer. Tomorrow I can finish the PowerPoint and be ready to go for 7pm. I gotta get some sleep.

It’s almost here

Well the time is almost upon us. Spring Break is here. Last night at about 830 it was final, the last class was dismissed. A quote from my favorite movie says “Just a few bumps and we’re haulin’ the mail” I’m at work now, heading to Kokomo for dinner with Kyle tonight and then packing and finding everything I need tomorrow. Sunday I’ll pick up any last minute details and head to Indy. Monday morning I’ll be on a plane, in the afternoon I’ll be on the boat. Life doesn’t get much better right now…

What a day…

Well it’s been one of those days so far today… I woke up this afternoon (yes I did mean afternoon) and sat around for a while before the Colts game came on. While I was reading the paper, waiting on the aforementioned game to start I was told that my uncle’s computer needed some work. Usually not a problem, something easy like plugging in the power cord on the printer, today was no such day. I went over there during halftime to check things out. He had hosed his system, spyware galore… That took a while to get off then he told me about some email that he had gotten from "Paypal." It was asking him to verify his password, he clicked the link and gave away all his personal info. So I had to get into the real Paypal and try to fix it all. He lost some money, but I think all is well now. It’s now halfway through the 4th quarter when I get home. Of course we all know by now that the Colts lost a tough game, they just couldn’t execute today, no big deal, the real season doesn’t start up again until January.

The other thing that went wrong today that I just recently found out was the fact that when I ordered a new computer yesterday from Dell, for whatever reason, the order didnt’ go through. I found a sweet deal on the Dell Outlet and tried to buy it, it didn’t work. Of course by the time I had figured that out the computer was gone. I just bought a brand new one, screw it, I’m tired of dealing with the crap, it’s only money right?

Now I’m sitting here waiting on time to go play ball, maybe that’ll go better…
