A nice long weekend

Friday I headed out to Ohio for work, just the usual easy trip over there and back, nothing spectacular.

Once I got home though, I headed out and did something I’ve been wanting to do for a while, bought a new charcoal grill. It’s just a little Weber Smokey Joe, perfect for Erin and I to make dinner on. We had pork chops on it that night too, they were amazing!

Saturday, Kyle and I headed out early to Wright-Patterson AFB to see the National Museum of the Air Force. We had a good time, just kinda wandered through the place and got to see some real pieces of history up close. I love looking at the medals and awards of soldiers, sailors, and airmen, the valor they exhibited that got them highest honors among their peers and among all Americans. On our way home we stopped for some Big Boy, it’s been a while since I’ve been here too.

The last stop we made on the way home was Hoosier Park. Horse racing and a casino, the perfect place to end the night. We placed a few bets on some races, if we would have had a clue as to how to bet on a race, we might have won a few bucks. It was cool though, I did learn quite a bit about how the betting works and maybe next time

Once we got home, I found the perfect way to end the night. A small fire and just some quiet time to reflect. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sunday was a typical Sunday. Mowed the yard while Erin cleaned the house up and then headed out for dinner and grocery shopping.

Today: I worked. Kinda. It was slow and long.

Gotta get back at this…

There’s been so much going on the last few days this might just be a dump post to catch everything up, I’ll probably miss a bunch too.

My birthday was last Saturday, the 28th year, it’s already begun and I feel like it shouldn’t be here yet. I feel like I’m getting older but not moving forward as fast as I always thought I would. I guess I just feel old or something and don’t know how/where to push forward right now. I’m sure in 20 years I’ll look back and wish I wouldn’t have pushed forward so much.

I wonder if I’ll still be writing then?

Saturday, Erin and I went out on the town so to speak, not a fancy thing, just out and about in Indy. We don’t do that much anymore, life gets in the way too much. We went to an auction first thing in the morning but didn’t stay long because things were just going for way too much money. After that we went to get her a new iPhone 3GS, I got my iPhone 4 Friday so she was itching for a new one too I think. We’re both pretty happy with each of our choices. We stopped at Lowes next and bought a new microwave, we had to do it, our old one took like 3 minutes to cook pizza rolls, now we can do it in 1. Then we went home, installed the new microwave, and chilled for a bit. Dinner at Logan’s and a quick grocery trip rounded out our day.

Sunday was my official birthday party or whatever you want to call it, family dinner basically. We had a good time. I did a good deed, and honestly it made me feel like I was making a difference and helping out someone who really needed it. I love that feeling. That selfless giving feeling that you get when you go out of your way to make a miracle happen for someone.

Last night, I went out with Kyle for a traditional guys night dinner, Hacienda and Best Buy. Had a pretty good time there too.

Work: What can I say about work other than it’s been stressful at times and dead at other times. Just not into talking about it now I guess.

Its odd to have old friends coming back into the picture now, we’ll see how that goes.

Courtney just headed off to Tasmania, it’s going to be a while before she gets back. I hope we can pick up right where we left off when she gets back.

I’d better get going… more forthcoming, including July 4th plans.

Another road trip

Kyle and I headed out on our quasi-monthly road trip last Saturday. We were heading to Plainfield to Metropolis, and then off to points unknown. How very unknown they would turn out.

We started out Saturday afternoon towards Indy and then to Plainfield. There’s a mall there called Metropolis. It’s huge, tons of stores and even more pedestrians that we had to dodge to drive around the place. It’s one of those open air malls that are becoming so popular around here, though I’m not quite sure why given that it’s winter here for 4 months of the year.

One of the first things we noticed about Plainfield was that everyone seemed to be in a bad mood. There were no smiling faces of consumerism, just blank stares as they made their way about the stores. Plainfield was officially sad. We drove around the mall, decided there was nothing that we really wanted to see and headed off to Starbucks for a tea/bathroom stop. After that we headed to Long John Silvers for a quick bite to eat before we headed out again to the great unknown.

raccoon.jpgWe had seen a place called Raccoon, Indiana on the map and thought maybe we should go check it out. We did, there was nothing there. As you can see from the sign, it’s a small place, in fact some maps don’t even show it, Google Maps had no idea what we were talking about. We drove down a road for a bit, “town” was a few houses on one road followed by an amazingly bumpy gravel road that we soon turned back on.

Since we were sort of close we headed up towards Crawfordsville and a town called Lapland, it was on the map but turns out it didn’t exist at all, not even a sign to take a picture of. Crawfordsville as we found out is home to Wabash College. WC is not in Wabash, it was named for the river, not the town. Who knew?wabashcollege.jpg

Crawfordsville brought a McDonald’s Sweet Tea run and the journey back towards Indy on I-74. Once back in Indy we headed to Trader Joe’s, my new favorite hippie grocery store. I’ll be stopping in there soon enough to pick up some things that I just didn’t want to get since they had to be kept cold and we didn’t know where the rest of the day would take us.

Turns out that the rest of the day was spent at Castleton Mall, followed by a trip to an out of business restaurant and another restaurant that had too long of a wait. We journeyed home and ended our epic road trip to no where. We saw parts of Indiana that few have dared to venture too and I’m sure we’ll never venture too again.

Next time? Richmond, the highest point in Indiana and who knows where after that. Good trip man, I look forward to the next one!

A long weekend

Thanksgiving weekend has nearly ended. 4 days of nothing and it was wonderful. I spent Thursday cooking and hanging out with the fam. Nothing out of the ordinary really, same old crap. I did go home early enough to watch the Colts game though, a victory that I honestly wasn’t sure would happen but they came through and pulled it off.

Friday I thought about getting up early to head out for the Black Friday sales, I slept in instead. It was nice to just lounge around for a bit in the morning. I did finally head to town though, got one Christmas present bought and then went to the bank. I was home around 130.  Erin came over later in the day and we headed out for the evening.

We went to Sears, honestly it wasn’t so bad. Sure there were people around, but I didn’t think the crowds were too bad and the cashiers seemed to be moving along fast enough. After that we headed to Texas Roadhouse to meet up with Kyle. A good dinner with a good conversation is always welcome.

There are times that we get so caught up in the world going on around us I think sometimes we forget the little things that make us happy. A nice slow dinner, a great conversation about everything and nothing. Sometimes just being there with friends is much more important than just about anything else that we think is “important” in the world.

I spent Saturday cleaning, Erin came over for dinner and we watched the first two Indiana Jones movies. Just relaxing.

Today I’m watching Season 3 of The Office and doing as little as possible besides laundry so I have clean clothes for work tomorrow.

That’s the weekend. Nothing essentially but it was so rewarding and felt so good too.

I’m in

I’m finally done moving. I’m in my new apartment right now. There are still some boxes to unpack, mostly stuff that goes in my closets anyway so I’m not worried. It was an incredibly long weekend moving. The weather didn’t help much, it was like 90+ degrees with humidity that just made it unbearable. Erin and Kyle came to help both days, there help was MUCH appreciated. We probably would still be moving stuff in if it wasn’t for them. I am really lucky to have people like that there for me. Thanks guys.

I’m pretty happy with the way things turned out, I finally got my internet and cable hooked up today. I’m online and watching the tube, those are things that just about killed me to be without. You never realize how connected you are until you are not connected anymore. I have about 6 hours of podcasts stacked up, my Tivo is empty but filling now, and I am totally out of touch with the world, newspapers just don’t cut it anymore at all. It’s not current, it’s yesterday’s news. I need to know what’s going on now.

This week has been hot and is only going to get hotter, it’s been long and I found out tonight that it’s about to get a whole lot longer over the next few days. Who knows how I’m going to make it all work, but it all works out in the end. Last weekend was proof of that.

I freaked out a bit on Saturday, and by a bit I really mean a lot. I had been in the car and moving stuff upstairs for two days straight, I hadn’t been putting stuff away or figuring out the lay of the land so to speak and felt entirely out of control of my own house. A nice shower and some alone time and all was well again. Fatigue and stress are not something that go together well with me.

I look at this at the start of a new life so to speak. I don’t think a whole lot will change for now but I just took a big step towards “being an adult” and all the things that go along with it.

I’m off to watch some tube, I miss TV.

My car tried to run away yesterday

What a weekend! Out with the gang (Erin, Ali, and Kyle) Friday and Saturday nights. Friday was dinner, driving and swimming followed by a movie. Saturday was TV, talking and swimming/hot tubbing. The gang is building again it seems. That always makes me happy, alone time and “us” time is great, but I need group time too now and then. The summer holds promise for some interesting times.

Yesterday was a day though, one that I was glad to be done with. I woke up in a bad mood from being out late the night before and it went down hill from there. Thankfully and regrettably I had the house to myself in the afternoon, I planned to clean up my room, the car, and just chill for a while. It quickly turned ugly. I let the battery on my car run down completely while cleaning it out and getting distracted with laundry. Dead, not even enough to make the engine turn over slightly. Crap.

Normally we have all kinds of odd tools and stuff around the house, not a battery charger though. Since no one else was home I had no one there to jump start my car either. I called and found that I had access to my uncle’s car but I had one small problem since my car was in my garage and no one was there to help guide it out. I got his car in my driveway and then thought about how I would get my car out. It’s a straight shot out of the garage into the driveway and the driveway isn’t that slanted, a quick push out the door and then jump in to stop it and then a quick jump and I’d be on my way. Of course it sounded all too easy.

I lined my car up to push it out, just a little turn to the steering wheel to square it up. A small push got me to the edge of the driveway/garage then another push would take the back wheels over the small bump that separates the two structures. One more push from the front wheels and I’d be set. I lined up on the front of the car, I couldn’t push with the door open or I’d risk ripping off the door of the car or screwing up the side of the garage door opening. I pushed just enough to get over the bump, the car took off down the driveway. I mean it went a lot faster that I thought it would. I quickly ran around to the side of the car, jumped into it while it was increasing in speed, slammed on the non-power brakes and threw it into gear. The car lurched to a stop nearly at the sidewalk by the edge of the driveway. I was 5 feet from the busiest road in my neighborhood. Terrific.

I hooked up the jumper cables and proceeded to jump the car, of course that didn’t go that well either. My battery was so dead that I couldn’t just hook up the cables and go, no I had to wait 10 minutes to get the thing charged up. Geez, not my day. Knowing what I know about cars (not that much probably) I knew that I had to let it run for a while so the alternator could charge up the battery again. I moved my uncle’s car back to his house and locked it up again.

A quick trip to Peru would help charge it up I thought. I took it to AutoZone to see if they’d test it out to make sure that I just ran it down and there really wasn’t a bigger problem with the car. The battery hadn’t fully charged during the 15 minute ride to the store and the guy said that I could have a problem with the battery. I had the cables in my trunk still and thought instead of buying a new $60-80 battery I would chance it for the evening and see how it would work out.

Back home to shower and get ready to go to Kokomo. The car started like a champ on my way out to hang out. I had the cables I was ready. We did our thing at Kyle’s house and headed home a little earlier than I thought we would, but late enough I suppose. No problems.

Today I headed back to AutoZone and received a clean bill of health for my battery. All is well again.

For a moment yesterday I imagined my car rolling down the driveway and crashing into a slow moving Chevy, that would kill my insurance payments for sure. Luckily all is well and the guy said I really have nothing to worry about. I’m still buying a battery charger this week, just in case.

A house made entirely of prime numbers

I’m basically just going to do a brain dump for you form the past three or four days since I’ve totlaly neglected my blog this week. The end of the school year is fast approachign and all that stuff is coming due of course. I’m happy to say that now I’m down to one last presentation to give before finals. I only have 3 of those so I feel pretty good about school right now.

Thursday was an interesting day, no one was at school basically and we had our huge paper due. The presentation went well no major foul-ups except that I said Vincennes was in the northern part of the state. Oh well. Thursday we all went out for TNH of course, Kyle joined us too. Softball was a bust, we headed to Jen’s instead. After the “1 block” walk to Blockbuster turned into 6 blocks and a stop at McD’s we started watching Three Amigos. Why? I don’t know. No one watched the movie and we all broke off into little groups and just chatted for a while basically. Brooke, Kyle, and Brittany provided ample discussion although I think Kyle was focusing more on the Yankees than our convo. Nothing else major really….

Friday was work. What a day, a huge new, 30,000 lb machine was delievered. Some adjustments had to be made to the buidling to get it in the door, namely, trimming the posts near the doors so that the machine would fit, did I mention these posts were cement and steel.. Yeah, it was kinda cool. The machine is there now, smells like a new car for some reason btw. Friday night Erin went with her cousin to the ballet and Orion and I headed out for some golf. Actually I taught him how to play golf, or at least attempted too. We hit a bucket at Rice’s and then tried out the par 3 course. The course was in horrid shape, greens were covered in weeds basically. I did OK, better than I thought I’d do after taking all of last year off basically. O did so so, mainly because he’s never hit a golf ball before. We went to Pancho’s got some great food and talked to Martin for a bit. That man is hilarious, a great waiter like him is hard to come by. I’m glad that I have people in places to help me out like Martin and Kevin (my hair guy). A quick trip to Walmart followed. The best part of the night though was a long drive through the country with the radio blaring, I mean loud and proud blaring. I had some country going and I just cranked it up and sang my heart out. I needed a night like that, I just drove around aimlessly and had a great time honesly. Finally though I figured I should head in and get some rest, I got in a little before 12.

Satuday I got up, washed the car (like with a bucket and sponge) and cleaned the whole thing out. Its looking pretty good still I must say. Needs a good wax job and no rain for a bit though. I actually havent’ washed the car very well lately, usually a quick run through the cheap place and that was it, no Mike’s since winter probably and no sponge jobs since before winter. I need to take better care of that thing really. Saturday night, Erin made lasagne and had some friends over. Great food, interesting convos, all in all a good time really.

Today, Sunday, I got up and relaxed. It was so nice outside I didn’t want to do anything but be outside soaking up some sun. We got a new grill so I put that together, seasoned it a bit and helped gma with some stuff. I cooked dinner (hamburgers and hot dogs with grilled onions) and ate too much. After dinner Kyle, Orion and I headed out to the park for some catch, that didn’t last long and we headed to Rice’s for another bucket. I gotta get my swing back, my slice is killing me! A quick stop at Jake’s closed out the night.

Now I’m home, it’s way too late, but I have most of the paper written, I should have been working on it all day but it was way too nice to be inside on the computer. Tomorrow I can finish the PowerPoint and be ready to go for 7pm. I gotta get some sleep.
