Looking back

I was reading this the other day. As I read here, many people are taking a look back and reevaluating. I guess it’s just that time of year or time in our lives anyways.
I no longer obsess about pens, I just like to have one in my pocket most of the time. I do however always carry my Moleskine in my back pocket, in case the mood strikes me to write something down, hence the pen in the pocket. I just don’t care so much about which pen now anymore.
Shoes are just driving me nuts lately, I don’t care, I wear one pair of boots to work, another pair of tenny’s to everything else. Comfort is key and I can’t find anything more comfortable than what I have. Perhaps I’ve reached shoe nirvana at such a young age that I can escape the Rockport phase of my later years.
Socks? Are you kidding, I still want to change them all the time.
Traditions are always changing, yet somehow they remain traditions. I can’t get past some things that I’ve always done, sir, ma’am, t-shirts, meals, all the same basically. I’ve added rituals like cleaning, meeting for coffee and other things but all in all I still feel a little more traditional than some others around me.
The phone thing has changed a bit, my rule: If you call and don’t leave a voice mail, it wasn’t important enough to at least say “Call me back,” I’m not calling you back and I’ll assume you just misdialed. Assume the same for me, no message, no callback.
I’m early for everything most of the time, I think.
Organization has changed a bit since I moved out on my own. I have things where I want them, I just don’t think I have enough room for everything now. Time to get rid of stuff soon I think.
I’m still a geek. iPhone, 2 laptops, a desktop, 3 iPods, a GPS in my car, I’m a gadget freak and I’m ok with that.
All in all I look back and where I’ve been and where I’m going and I have to say that I feel pretty optimistic about things. Sure I’ve missed a few opportunities, I’ve missed chances to do wonderful and great things. But in the end, I like where I am, where I’ve been and what the future ahead looks like.
New habits that I’ve noticed are:
Coffee pot must be set before bed.
Clothes must be laid out in bathroom before bed.
Two different pillows on my bed, one hard, one soft. Most nights I sleep on the soft one, I use the hard one for support and for hot nights when I want to be on top of the pillow not thoroughly wrapped in it.
I’m sure there are tons more and I’m going to try to post more of them as they come along. I’ve posted too much this time as it is.
Are you looking back and reminiscing or just blasting forward without regard for what you’ve done before? I urge you to take a look back now and then. Adjust your course from time to time. But in the end, be happy where you are going.

A good day of music at work

I got a new setup at work this week, more of a desktop situation than my former laptop thing. Basically I took my laptop, built a stand for my monitor to site on top of it, added a wireless keyboard and mouse and called it done.
Most of today I’ve been up and down from my desk, but the Party Shuffle on iTunes has been cranking out the jams when I am here. Here’s a bit that I heard this afternoon:

  • John Mellencamp – Jack and Diane
  • Jack Johnson – Upside Down
  • The Beatles – Penny Lane
  • Rascal Flatts – Mayberry
  • Montgomery Gentry – Hell Yeah
  • Brooks & Dunn – Only In America
  • Caedmon’s Call – Daring Daylight Escape
  • Guns N’ Roses – Patience
  • Jeremy Camp – Everything
  • Billy Joel – Captain Jack
  • Craig Morgan – I’m Country
  • Goo Goo Dolls – Better Days
  • Eve 6 – Here’s to the Night
  • Rascal Flatts – Kissable, Huggable

Sure it’s a throw back to popular music of the late nineties and early 2000’s but dangit those are some good songs. Mellencamp, Jack Johnson, The Beatles, Rascal Flatts, GnR, Billy Joel and you can’t forget the Goo Goo Dolls. How can you not love those people? I enjoyed my music today. Tomorrow I gotta remember a longer cord so I don’t have to hunch over the keyboard so much.

A few confessions

I just want to get a few things out in the open. I was just sitting around thinking about PostSecret the other day. I sort of made my list of “secrets” they aren’t that profound really. They are just things I thought of and thought I would share.

I abuse things and forget about others. Here’s my list:

  • My iPhone is scratched on the back, even though it’s been in a case since 5 minutes after I took it out of the box. Too much dust and dirt at work.
  • My car has 134,563 miles on it. I’ve owned it for just over 3 and one half years.
  • I used 2,219 minutes last month on my cell. Along with 616 text messages.
  • I’ve had a huge dent in my fender for over a year. The tire hangs out a bit the dent is so large.
  • My last laptop computer had the paint worn off the keys on a few of the letters. None to report on this one, yet.
  • My laptop was scratched across the top in less than a month.
  • My MacBook is held together with super glue, electrical tape and a binder clip.

Others, not so much:

  • I’ve owned dumbbells in one form or another for over 3 years. I last used them around Christmas time.
  • I’ve never cleaned my oven.
  • Nor under my refrigerator.
  • I have aluminum foil on my TV antennae so that I can get HDTV from one extra channel. It’s draped across my sliding door for strength.
  • I really need to wash my bathroom rugs, 3 months is too long. I just hate the sound of them in the dryer.
  • I have things in my freezer from when I moved into the apartment. Freezer burn doesn’t go away.
  • I use the same bath towel every day to dry off, unless I’m feeling particularly dirty and then I’ll get a new one every day. I flip back and forth on this one.
  • Combing/Brushing my hair, has never been a forte of mine. Last accomplished: December 27th.

Is it that interesting? No. Just something to post.

Gimme some spyware!

I was working on someone’s computer recently, their home computer, on company time. It’s a wonderful thing I know.

As I was finishing up Windows Update and adding all the usual security software, browser lockdowns and the like, she casually walked by and said, “Make sure I have some spyware installed, please.” I nearly fell out of my chair. I have spent the last 2 days working on this thing on and off, removing trojans and the like, finally just formatting was the only thing worth doing. She had spyware, trust me dear, you don’t want any more.

The laptop is restored now, oh yeah, restored, the restore CDs are lost so I was stuck looking online for 5 year old drivers for a laptop with unknown specs… Nice. All is well now.

In other news: *If* I get back into podcasting, something I’ve been chewing again, this will be my kit.  Small, cheap and seems simple. This could be the Gutenberg press for the podcasting masses, much like Audacity, mAudio kits, and GarageBand have been already. We’ll see, not released yet.

PS: If you are unaware, spyware is bad, anti-spyware is good. Trojans are worse.  Here’s a good place to start I suppose.

I really don’t post enough

I was checking the stats today, I actually haven’t really done that since April of this year. I’ve been a slacker lately, both here and in life. Time for change. I’ll be updating the site over the next few days, mostly plugin updates and prep for the new WordPress 2.4 updates due later this month.

But I also have to post more, even just the little nothings that I look back on and don’t understand sometimes. I’m gonna figure out how to post more, iPhone, laptop, desktop, Twitter, Del.icio.us, all of them give me a way to post, I just have to take more advantage of them.

Get ready, something’s comin’.

It’s all finally unpacked!

Yesterday was the day that I finally got everything unpacked. I know I’ve been living here for just over a week now but I still have some boxes sitting around in the bathroom and bedroom that needed attention. Most of it was non-essential stuff, just things that needed to be put on shelves and the like. Now though, I’m done. It’s all over and I’m here to stay. I can’t say enough about how quite and non-bothersome my neighbors are, I barely know they are even here.

I like it here. It’s nice to just relax and do my own thing when I want to. Right now I’m sitting outside with a glass of tea and my laptop just enjoying a cool summer night. Nothing could be better it seems. Except the mosquitos and other little bugs buzzing around the light of the screen.

The last week at work has been busy and hard. We’ve gotten a lot done but I think that people’s nerves are about shot. We’re just busy and that’s good but busy also means that mistakes are more likely to happen, and we’ve made a few.

This blog has been neglected lately, I just haven’t felt the urge to post that much honestly. Life is going on how it always done, minus the move and new apartment. I still do what I’ve always done, it just doesn’t seem as exciting as it used to and at the same time I’m still having fun and enjoying  myself. I can’t say to you that I’ll post a whole lot in the coming weeks and months but stay tuned, there will be updates from time to time. I’m sure those of you that are still here are reading what I write, I just don’t seem to have much to write anymore. Alas in time, I’m sure that the world will work itself out and I’ll post 3 times a day again.

I think I was productive

Today was one of those days with lots to do and honestly I think I did more than I expected. I feel very accomplished right now.

I got up, fixed my uncle’s computer. My g-ma and I decided that my cousin needed her own computer so we found a Dell that will suit her just fine. Nothing fancy, but it’ll work great. I’m paying for it, g-ma is paying me back in a month. I went to Kokomo and fixed Franki’s computer kinda. It works fine, just not as well as I’d like it to. I read the WSJ for the first time, not bad, I feel so adult now. 🙂 Erin and I got our plane tickets for spring break. We’re set and I’m excited about the trip again. So today I’ve fixed 2 computers, ordered 1 more, bought 2 plane tickets. $1200 and I really didn’t spend any of my money. A good day really.

Time for bed so I can be up to watch the Colts pound the Steelers!
