Woohoo!

This has been the most exciting and eventful few days that I can remember. First off we had all the holiday madness, friends, family and all the turmoil as usual. We had a good Christmas and got some great gifts. But after all that, like two nights ago it all got a little weird.
I’m sure most of you know that I’m on twitter (@gibb626) and pretty active within my one little group. I follow about 300 people and its mostly reciprocal. I “speak” with probably 15-20 regularly. Jim Irsay is someone I follow but he doesn’t follow me and I don’t speak with him at all. Until Tuesday night. He posted a riddle and the winner got a trip to Hawaii and the ProBowl.
I won.
Seriously, yesterday I spoke with his assistant and they are working out all the flight and hotel details, but we’ll be spending 5 nights in Honolulu and the end of January! Erin and I are both still in shock a bit to say the least.
The answer to the riddle was “one hundred forty characters” the question was basically a long tweet that had the numbers 1, 4, 0 and the word characters at the end. It wasn’t that hard but it wasn’t that easy either. Tons of people got it right after me. I was lucky.
After Irsay declared that there was a winner but that they were working on determining exactly who it was, I started to check to see if it was me. I was flooded with tweets that said i had won, of course not from anyone with any authority but still… People were saying I’d won! I was wired. Did I mention it was after 11pm and Erin had work the next day? She didn’t quite believe what I was talking about mainly because she wanted to go to bed and secondly because I think she thought my Twitter fascination was a waste of time. But I didn’t really care, I thought I had won and I had no chance of actually sleeping until the real winner was announced. Irsay then tweeted that they would announce the next morning.
Kyle and I headed the Steak N Shake to kill some time. I got home about 2:30am. I laid down and stayed awake all night. Waiting…
The next morning at 8 I moved to the couch to wait. At 10 I got a direct message that they thought the winner was me but they weren’t announcing for sure yet. Well that pretty much made me twice as excited, phone calls went out to friends and family with the caveat that it wasn’t official yet. At 2pm I got another direct message this one was a phone number to his assistant to setup the travel arraignments. Moments later he announced it on Twitter. I was flooded again…

The other big news is that Erin and I are moving forward on our Debt Snowball. Yesterday we also paid off the next in the line. We still have a ways to go but since this was our first big payoff, I think now this is just the start of really getting the snowball rolling. It only gets bigger as it rolls along.

What does it mean?

As has become tradition here, a simple post and nothing more in honor of the season.

8And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

A few confessions

I just want to get a few things out in the open. I was just sitting around thinking about PostSecret the other day. I sort of made my list of “secrets” they aren’t that profound really. They are just things I thought of and thought I would share.

I abuse things and forget about others. Here’s my list:

  • My iPhone is scratched on the back, even though it’s been in a case since 5 minutes after I took it out of the box. Too much dust and dirt at work.
  • My car has 134,563 miles on it. I’ve owned it for just over 3 and one half years.
  • I used 2,219 minutes last month on my cell. Along with 616 text messages.
  • I’ve had a huge dent in my fender for over a year. The tire hangs out a bit the dent is so large.
  • My last laptop computer had the paint worn off the keys on a few of the letters. None to report on this one, yet.
  • My laptop was scratched across the top in less than a month.
  • My MacBook is held together with super glue, electrical tape and a binder clip.

Others, not so much:

  • I’ve owned dumbbells in one form or another for over 3 years. I last used them around Christmas time.
  • I’ve never cleaned my oven.
  • Nor under my refrigerator.
  • I have aluminum foil on my TV antennae so that I can get HDTV from one extra channel. It’s draped across my sliding door for strength.
  • I really need to wash my bathroom rugs, 3 months is too long. I just hate the sound of them in the dryer.
  • I have things in my freezer from when I moved into the apartment. Freezer burn doesn’t go away.
  • I use the same bath towel every day to dry off, unless I’m feeling particularly dirty and then I’ll get a new one every day. I flip back and forth on this one.
  • Combing/Brushing my hair, has never been a forte of mine. Last accomplished: December 27th.

Is it that interesting? No. Just something to post.

Vacation Day 1

I took off the rest of the year from work (except for 15 minutes via the web on Friday/Saturday at the end of the month). 11 days of no work basically. I have some plans, painting, relaxing, cleaning, etc. I’m going to try to blog about each day at it goes.

I planned to wake up early today, head to the bank and then head out to finish my Christmas shopping before it got too crazy out. Didn’t happen. I woke up at 1045, I finally got out of the house at 1130, the bank closes at 12 and it’s 35 minutes away. I made it to the bank. Then I headed off to the mall. Everyone else got up before 1045 or didn’t have to go to the bank because they were already there.

I think I literally walked a quarter mile to get in the place. I headed to my first stop, sold out. Second stop, long lines but they had what I needed. Third stop, longer lines but they have staggard lines (half close to the door, half a little farther back) I ran to one of the closer to the door ones, around about 6 other people, and got out quickly. Did I break a rule or some kind of social more by doing that? I don’t care particularly, it’s Christmas time and it’s every man for themself.

I’m back home now and totally just relaxing, while doing some laundry, I need to clean the house but I’m just not in the mood today. Maybe late tonight or tomorrow, or next week.

Relaxation.

After outting update: Erin and I went out with Kyle tonight. We ran into my grandparents and they even bought us dinner.  Nice. We headed out to Best Buy and the mall. It’s always an adventure, though we didn’t go to Penney’s for towels (inside joke). All in all it was a pretty good time. It’s raining out now but the night was great with great friends and always interesting conversation.

Christmas Vacation is on Tivo now, my favorite holiday movie after A Christmas Story. What can I say, I’m a little demented. I’ve enver seen White Christmas or It’s a Wonderful Life, so I go with what I know. Heading to bed soon so I can do nothing tomorrow but football and chillin’.

A worthless week

This is the week between Christmas and New Year’s. At work, we have 4 people in here now, down from 7 earlier. This is the most worthless week ever! No one is here, no one is going to be here. I have not a whole lot to do. I redid part of our the company website, I listened to some podcasts… Time to go home soon…
