It’s getting towards the end of the year again. Winter is coming quick.
The leaves are almost totally fallen here at The Green (new name for the house I think), at least in the backyard. Our Maple is almost totally bare now, the Beech tree refuses to give its hoard up until its entirely too cold and snowy to do anything about it. I’ve got plenty of leaves to clean up though, our leaf blower died last weekend and Sears says it’ll take until at least December to get it repaired. Oh joy.
I’ve got plenty left to do though: There’s windows to seal from the drafts, gutters to clean out so the driveway doesn’t flood with ice in January, the garage needs cleaned out so Erin can park inside and we can get the snow blower in there, and probably tons of other stuff I haven’t even thought of yet.
There’s so much left to do to prepare our home for the winter that I know is just around the corner even though I still feel a warm breeze now and then. The sun that I catch on my way home warms me through but I know when I get out of the car I will certainly freeze again.
It seems that fall isn’t what it used to be, there’s no more crisp morning with a hint of leaf smoke in it, no long evenings outside with a fire or working in the yard. Sunrise and sunset seem to coincide with leaving for and returning from work. I miss childhood and the innocence from time that you get, it doesn’t matter when you start or stop playing only that you get enough in before dark comes. Now it seems that I just try to get through the day and prepare for the next one.
