I’ve made it!
WordPress 2.3 is installed both here at LoSC and at work. It’s taken me most of the morning, I had some very outdated plugins here and the theme is less than helpful at being customizable. Work was a bit easier but I had to take every precaution with backups and the like.
Arguably the biggest new feature of 2.3 is the addition of native tagging. I love tags, they make it easy to get the gist of something or relate it to something else. However, 2.3 did it wrong. It’s not intuitive, importing is in a weird spot ( Dashboard -> Manage -> Import) and management must be done basically through another plugin, Tag Managing Thing. The plugin works amazingly well. Tags support is lacking in the new version as well. Using this page and this page to learn about the tag cloud and tag features I found it hard to understand that in order to exclude tags from the cloud you must know the tag-id (term id) which isn’t easily accessed without the plugin and some checking of the address link of the tag you just “edited.” Confused? Yeah I was too, like I said it took me quite a long time.
I’m happy that the new version is out, I’ve been anticipating it for a while. If only things could have gone smoother and been more intuitive. Next version in 120 days (give or take) pending security releases in the mean time, I would predict a 2.3.1 release within the next 10 days at the latest. OSS is amazing sometimes, tons of accomplishment with so little time between major releases.
